General Information
Prior Planning is Essential!
If emergency situations occur that are not covered in this information, call the appropriate telephone number for instructions. The information contained in this chart is presented to familiarize university students and employees with emergency procedures on campus. If there is an emergency, deans, department heads, supervisors and building managers have the responsibility to provide general instructions to students, faculty, staff and visitors.
Angelo State University Police, along with other properly identified emergency personnel, are responsible for the overall management of an incident on campus. In order to properly mitigate a crisis, emergency personnel must rely on the cooperation and assistance of deans, department heads, supervisors and building managers. Their roles in an incident are to assist police and emergency personnel with building evacuations and properly moving individuals to designated emergency assembly areas. Other assistance may be needed as directed by emergency personnel.
- Before an emergency occurs, know the locations of the fire extinguishers, fire alarm pull stations and at least TWO emergency exits in your area.
- Please make sure that you are familiar with your phone and the dial-out procedures that are required to make an emergency phone call. Also remember to use one of the emergency call boxes located strategically around the campus. The locations of these emergency phones are depicted on official campus maps. These call boxes are connected directly to the University Police Department.
- Emergency assembly areas are designed to be temporary staging areas in the event a building is evacuated for an extended period of time. Emergency assembly areas provide a safe and coordinated place to meet in the event of a major incident. These areas will be manned by police and emergency personnel who will assist in providing further information and instructions.
- When trying to make an emergency call from the campus, please dial 2071. This will provide you immediate contact with University Police. If attempting to dial 911 from a campus phone, callers must dial 9-911. Dialing 9-911 will immediately direct your call to the San Angelo Police Department.
- Persons with hearing disabilities who need to report an emergency should call 9-911.
- When calling to report an emergency:
- Get to a safe location.
- Give your name, phone number, building name and room number.
- Describe in detail the nature of the emergency.
- DON’T HANG UP! Let the other person end the conversation since additional information may be needed.

Members of the university community can quickly receive news and instructions during campus emergencies, thanks to a campus notification system called UAlert.
Through the UAlert service, campus leaders can send simultaneous alerts to individuals in a matter of minutes through landline phones, cellular phones, text messaging and e-mail. The system augments the communication tools the university already has in place to respond to a variety of crises, ranging from weather-related closings to unique emergency situations where time is of the essence.
UAlert can be used, for instance, to send targeted messages to certain individuals, such as people in a specific building or department, for alerts that do not concern the entire campus. Messages are relayed through UAlert using the contact information provided by faculty, staff and students. All such information is secure and will remain private.
UAlert is only as useful as the contact information people provide. The UAlert system allows individuals to register multiple phone numbers in addition to e-mail and text messaging information.
