Remote Network Access
VPN
ASU uses VPN software to allow remote users to connect securely to the ASU network and get to resources that are usually only available from on campus.
You must install and run the VPN software in order to remotely access files on your ASU drive space. See the box on the right for links to download and install the VPN software for your operating system.
Remote Drive Access
Once connected to the network with the VPN software, students can access documents and files stored on their P: drive from off campus, in residence halls, and from the wireless network.
You can access your P: drive remotely using Internet Explorer or other FTP software.
Accessing your P: drive using Internet Explorer:
Windows users may use Internet Explorer to make an FTP connection to the ASU network and access their personal files.
- VPN Connection must be established.
- Open Internet Explorer.
- Click on Tools > Internet Options > Advanced
- Make sure the option “Use Passive FTP (for Firewall and DSL compatibility)” is selected.
- Type ftp://asudrive.angelo.local in the address bar.
- Type in your ASU username and password in the dialogue box.
- Copy files to a temporary space on your hard drive or removable media to work with them.
- Paste the files from your temporary space back into your P: drive space when you are done working with them.
Accessing your P: drive using FTP Software:
You may use any FTP program to connect to the ASU network. A list of software available for free is listed at right. Specific directions will vary slightly between programs, but the process is the same for all.
- VPN Connection must be established.
- Open your FTP software.
- Create a new connection using the following information:
- FTP Server/Host/Address = asudrive.angelo.local
- Username/ID = your ASU username
- Password = your ASU password
- Transfer files to a temporary space on your hard drive or removable media
- Transfer the files from your temporary space back into your ASU space when you are done working with the data.

Remote Desktop Connection
Faculty and Staff can access their office PC using Remote Desktop Connection software.
From your office PC:
- You will need your Computer Name. Go to Start > Control Panel > System and look at the Computer Name tab. Write down the Full computer name.
- In the same location click on the Remote tab. Make sure BOTH boxes are checked.
- Leave the machine ‘On’ but not logged in.
From home:
- Click the link in the box on the right to download and install the VPN software. Once installed, follow the Usage Instructions on the same page to use the VPN software to connect to the ASU network.
- Once connected with the VPN software, open Remote Desktop Connection from Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > Remote Desktop Connection. (You may also go to Start > Run and type in mstsc)
- Enter your computer name as written down above and click Connect.
- Log in with [yourusername]@angelo.local and your password.
- You are connected.
Remote Drive Access
Faculty and Staff can also access their network drives remotely. Please contact the Help Desk for instructions.
