Clean Access
Introduction
Internet worms and viruses are an ever-changing and ever-present threat to computer users on our campus, and all over the world. There's a chance that this has already affected your personal system, and, if so, you know how long it can take to clean a compromised system. We are continually striving to help campus users stay protected from these threats and this project is one of our latest initiatives. While Clean Access itself does not protect you against Viruses and Trojans; it helps everyone involved know that you have taken the necessary steps to help prevent the spread of such items on the ASU network.
Information Technology has introduced a security system called Clean Access or NAC (Network Admission Control) for all on-campus laptops and desktops in the residence halls and for select wireless networks. NAC will provide a more safe and reliable method to use the network in residence halls.
This is accomplished through the installation of an agent on the PC which checks for the presence of:- Anti-virus programs (McAfee, Symantec, Trend-Micro, AVG)
- The most recent security patches for your anti-virus software
- The most recent Microsoft Windows security patches (Microsoft Windows Critical Updates)
Phase One
It will be necessary to install the Clean Access agent and log in with your ASU credentials before being allowed to access the ASU network. Your ASU credentials will be the same username and password that you use for the computer labs as well as Ramport. You will also be made aware of what checks your computer fails. Although you will not be required to correct the problems at this time, it is advisable that you make these corrections before passing the checks becomes mandatory.
Phase Two
It will be necessary to log in again and all checks will need to be passed in order to access the network. If your computer does not pass these checks, you will be given a predetermined amount of time and temporary access to certain resources to correct the failed checks.
What Clean Access does NOT do:
Cisco Clean Access only ensures your computer is not vulnerable to risks and viruses by checking for holes, looking for system patches and validating anti-virus installations.
- Clean Access does NOT scan for viruses on your computer - it makes sure you have software installed that can scan for viruses.
- Clean Access does NOT access files on your computer or network share.
- Clean Access does NOT watch where you surf or track who you email.
- Clean Access does NOT give anyone the ability to "watch" the activities on your computer.
Clean Access merely offers an easy, user-friendly way to keep your computer updated and, thus, protected from emerging network exploits, worms, and viruses. Our goal is to sustain and enhance the security, performance and usability of the campus network.
