Library News

On Monday (8/16), the Library unveiled a new interface for its online catalog (RamCat). Users who have grown accustomed to the “old” RamCat will be surprised by the very different look and feel of the new RamCat. Most of the reasons for the transition deal with functional, technical, behind-the-scenes issues, but there are several public aspects that the Library hopes patrons will use and enjoy.

Among some of the more noticeable differences are:

  • Colors: the new interface follows the color scheme of the ASU Web pages;
  • Search tabs: aside from the more familiar ‘basic,’ ‘advanced,’ and ‘course reserve’ tabs, the new interface has a dedicated “Author” search tab, which simplifies searching for items by a named individual or group, as it contains specially marked spaces for inserting last and first name;

  • Result list: the new interface displays a numbered list of titles, with all pertinent and relevant information logically displayed underneath;

  • Availability status: in place of the sometimes confusing “Status: See Library Location,” the new interface displays a very visible green checkmark (Item is available to check out) when a physical item is available for use, and a red “x” (Item is not available to check out) when a physical item is in use.
  • Item type icons: to the left of each title on the result list is an icon representing the nature of the Library item listed (an open tome (Open book image) for a book, a video camera (Videocamera image) for a video, etc.)
There are even more features of interest that you will discover as you use the new RamCat. Staff members are updating the online tutorials to highlight many of these new features. If you need assistance with using the new RamCat, please contact the Reference Desk (942-2141 or .
