The home of Taj Mahal, one of the seven modern wonders of the world, India is the second most populous country in the world, the 7th largest area wise, and the most populous democracy in the world. India is one of the oldest civilizations in the world and has achieved a large amount of socioeconomic progress over the last 60 years of its independence. India has become self sufficient in agriculture, the world's third largest economy in purchasing power, and is now the tenth industrialized country in the world.

Home to the Indus Valley civilization and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Four major world religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism originated here, while Islam, Christianity, Judaism and Zoroastrianism arrived in the first millennium CE and shaped the region's variegated culture.

India is located in the Northern hemisphere and is bordered by Pakistan and Afghanistan to the northwest and China, Bhutan, and Nepal to the north, Myanmar to the east and Bangladesh to the west. The mainland comprises four regions, namely, the great mountain zone, plains of the Ganga and the Indus, the desert region and the southern Peninsula.

When anyone thinks of India, it is hard to escape thinking about the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, who has inspired many people like Martin Luther King Jr. by his non-violent stance in attaining independence for India. India attained independence on August 15, 1947 from the British. The Indian flag is a tricolor (saffron, white and green) with an Ashoka chakra (24 spokes representing the 24 hours of the day).
