My Program - Degree Plan (Page 3 of 9)
Degree Plan
All graduate students working toward a master's degree must submit an official degree plan prior to their second registration. A non-official degree plan form was mailed to you with your acceptance letter. Degree plan forms are also available in the appropriate departmental offices as well as in the Graduate Office.
In order to make the degree plan official, the student must first confer with the program advisor. The student and advisor must sign the plan then send it to the Graduate Dean for approval. A copy of the approved official degree plan is sent back to the student and the major department office. The original signed degree plan is retained in the student's file in the Graduate Office. The student should consult the degree plan before each registration.
Degree Plan Modifications
After a student has had the degree plan approved, any changes to the degree plan must be approved by the relevant departmental graduate advisor and the Dean of the Graduate School. Such approvals must be obtained BEFORE the student enrolls in any course for which a modification is sought.
Degree Evaluation
Once an official degree plan has been filed with the Graduate Office, students may view their progress toward completing their degree by accessing the Degree Evaluation link in Rams-Logon through RamPort on the ASU web site. The screen will show courses completed, courses in progress, courses not applicable to the degree, and courses yet to be taken. If the student has any questions about this degree audit, the student should contact the Graduate Office (325/942-2169) for clarification or corrections, if necessary.
Undergraduate Courses
A graduate student may not register for any undergraduate class without first obtaining an authorization from the Graduate Office. This is true whether the undergraduate class is for leveling, graduate credit, teacher certification, personal enrichment, or any other purpose.
This is not to say that graduate students are not eligible to take undergraduate classes. For financial aid purposes, we need a mechanism to track what you are taking and why. In some cases, a graduate student's financial aid may be affected if only undergraduate class work is taken in a given term. Full or part-time status may also be affected by undergraduate enrollment concurrent with graduate enrollment. For information about how undergraduate enrollment may affect your financial aid, please contact the Financial Aid Office.
Undergraduate Courses for Undergraduate Credit
Call the Graduate Office (942-2169) to ask for an authorization to register for any undergraduate course for undergraduate credit. You will be asked why you are taking the course(s). You will need to specify the section of the course(s) you plan to take.
Authorization* (see above for meaning) to register for the course and section will be given, and you will be eligible to register for that course if space in the course is available.
Transfer Credit
A maximum of 6 semester credit hours of graduate work completed at a regionally accredited institution may be transferred to a 30-hour degree program; a maximum of 9 semester credit hours may be transferred to degree programs with more than 30 hours, with the exception of the Master of Education, Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction, and Master of Arts in Communications programs in which a maximum of 6 semester hours may be transferred. Students wishing to transfer course work must complete a Request for Transfer Form available from the Graduate Office. The course(s) requested for transfer must be appropriate to the Degree Plan and approved by the Program Advisor and Graduate Dean. Official transcripts showing the successful completion of the transferred courses must be on file in the Graduate Office. No graduate work for which the student received a grade lower than B will be accepted by transfer. All transferred course work must have been completed no more than 6 years prior to the awarding of the master's degree at Angelo State University. No time extensions are granted for transfer course work.
Changing Major
Students who wish to change their major must turn in the Change of Major Form to the Graduate School for the desired program. Admission to the new program is contingent upon the student meeting the new program's admission requirements.
