Welcome to the Center for Academic Excellence!
The Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) was established during the fall 2001 semester to provide ASU students an enriched educational experience that leads to the successful completion of an academic degree. Components within the Center include:
- Academic Advisement. Both professional and faculty academic advisors act as guides and resource persons who assist students, primarily undeclared majors, in assessing academic goals, understanding requirements, navigating university policy and procedure, identifying a course of study and selecting a major. They assist students in the exploration of degree and course offerings, and provide students with timely and accurate information. Academic advisors acknowledge that through caring and competent advising, our students are better equipped to reach their full academic potential. The Office of Academic Advisement is located in the CAE on the third floor of the Porter Henderson Library.
- Career Development. Career counselors are available to assist ASU students in career decision-making by providing career counseling, administration and interpretation of various career inventories, and occupation information. They assist students seeking internships, career and job search planning, and application to graduate and professional schools. Various job databases, directories of employer information, and career information sites are available in the Career Development resource room. A part-time job listing service is maintained to assist students in securing employment on campus or within the community. The Office of Career Development is located in the University Center, Room 114.
- Supplemental Instruction. Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic assistance program that uses student-led group study sessions to assist students in traditionally difficult courses. The typical SI session, an hour-long meeting held in a classroom on campus, offers ASU students an opportunity to actively involve themselves with the course content by participating in discussions about the lecture, clarifying notes, practicing problem-solving techniques and developing effective study skills strategies. The Office of Supplemental Instruction is located in the CAE on the third floor of the Porter Henderson Library.
- Transitional Services. Transitional Services provides freshman and transfer student with information and academic assistance which promote quality and seamless transition into the University and ensure academic success. Transitional Services facilitates the Early Alert Program whereby faculty are encouraged to submit names of those students who may be jeopardizing their academic future, as Transitional Services make student contacts and referrals. The Office of Transitional Services is located in the CAE on the third floor of the Porter Henderson Library.
- University Studies. Through its freshman success course, USTD 1201: Critical Thinking, University Studies enables entering ASU students the opportunity to develop decision-making and problem-solving skills needed in both their academic work and future career fields. Theories of cognition, meta-cognition, motivation, and learning are explored in support of academic and skill development.
